Development Team

The Hardwood Next Wave Development Program is based on a foundation of athletic excellence, sportsmanship and personal development. Through the sport and community of cycling, young athletes are coached in an atmosphere where teamwork is balanced with individual growth and discovery. Our objective is to create a platform where young people can be successful both on and off their bikes while having FUN!

Ensuring appropriate preparation in physiological, psychological, technical and tactical growth is the cornerstone to our approach. Understanding the importance of Long Term Athlete Development (LTAD) in our young athletes is the essence of our Development Program, which is why we have established a variety of programs to encompass the many levels of advancement. These programs include the following program specifics plus all the “Additional benefits” outlined below:

Trailblazers

6-7 years of age $625.00
Key Objective: Developing Movement Literacy

  • Follows guideline of “Active Start” Phase of Cycling LTAD
  • Focus is young athletes new to the sport of cycling

Program Specifics

  • Introduction to basics of cycling safety including bike and helmet fit
  • Learning to handle the bike using fun games to develop the necessary skills
  • Improve balance and introduction of spatial awareness and obstacle recognition
  • Introduction to trail riding and group riding
  • Introduction to the fun of racing with friends and family
  • 45 minute training session prior to Wednesday Night Race

Bronze

8-9 years of age $650.00
Key Objective: Developing Physical Literacy

• Follows guidelines of “FUNdamentals” Phase of Cycling LTAD
• Focus on learning the basic cycling skills

Program Specifics

• Introduction to basic cycling skills such as braking, cornering, and gearing
• Introduction to Citizen level, fun-based racing with friends and family
• Build speed, power and endurance through exercises, games and racing
• Develop a love of physical effort and improving skills while riding/racing
• 50 minute training session prior to Wednesday Night Race

Bronze Race

10-11 years of age $775.00
Key Objective: Developing Skills

  • Follows guidelines of “Learn to Train” Phase of Cycling LTAD
  • Focus on skill and physical development

Program Specifics

  • Continuation of skill development in progressively challenging situations
  • Fun, skills focused rides lasting up to 60-75 minutes in duration
  • Develop basic race skills and knowledge through training exercises and fun games
  • Introduction of skills-based objectives for specific race applications
  • 60 minute training session prior to Wednesday Night Race
  • 7-8 team training weekend sessions for 120 minutes
  • Pre-ride with coaches the day before O-Cup Races
  • Warm-up and review of technical and tactical strategies with coaches prior to O-Cup

Silver

12-13 years of age $900.00
Key Objective: Becoming a Skills Champion

  • Follows guidelines of “Learn to Train” Phase of Cycling LTAD
  • Emphasis on “window of trainability” in speed and technical skills

Program Specifics

  • Continue work in technical applications at higher level for racing success
  • Introduction to tactical approaches in racing (course knowledge, strategies, etc.)
  • Developing leg speed of 100+ RPM to build aerobic endurance and proper cadence
  • Riding 2-3 times per week (in addition to racing) for a duration of 90-120 minutes
  • Weekly training schedule provided for each athlete
  • Motivating athletes to sharpen skills through repetition and fun drills/games
  • 60 minute training session prior to Wednesday Night Race
  • Team training session every weekend for 120+ minutes
  • Pre-ride with coaches the day before O-Cup Races
  • Warm-up and review of technical and tactical strategies with coaches prior to O-Cup

Silver Race

14-15 years of age $1000.00
Key Objective: Becoming a Competition Focused Athlete

  • Follows guidelines of “Train to Train” Phase of Cycling LTAD
  • Emphasis is on “building the engine” and increased physical literacy

Program Specifics

  • Developing self awareness and good training routines
  • Focus on building aerobic power, endurance, speed and core strength
  • Training 4-5 times a week (in addition to racing) for a duration of 120+ minutes
  • Weekly training schedule provided for each athlete
  • Assisting athletes in transitioning to road riding (skills and safety) for training
  • Learn to become self directed and sufficient (discipline) in their training
  • 60 minute training session prior to Wednesday Night Race
  • Team training session every weekend for 120-180 minutes
  • Pre-ride with coaches the day before O-Cup Races
  • Warm-up and review of technical and tactical strategies with coaches prior to O-Cup
